HRT vs. TRT: What’s the Difference?
Hormone Replacement has become quite a hot topic in the wellness space and it’s led to some really powerful conversations regarding what options are out there! We at Florida Center for Hormones and Wellness want to help educate and treat our patients so that they can be happy, healthy, and vital for the long haul. That’s how we help people live their best lives.
So let’s just get straight to the meat of this blog post: What’s the difference between HRT and TRT? First things first, let’s break down those initialisms, then uncover what is different and what’s similar.
HRT = Hormone Replacement Therapy
TRT = Testosterone Replacement Therapy
OK, so we see one word is different, and that’s it… What does that mean?
The key difference lies within that single word difference, and it really can make a difference in terms of treatment and, ultimately, the results you could feasibly expect to see from either therapy.
See, our bodies rely on quite a few hormones to function properly, not just testosterone. Although testosterone is extremely important to our overall wellness, it’s not the only factor or our hormone health that matters.
So What Other Hormones Do I Need?
There are a handful of “key hormones” as they’re referred to within the holistic wellness world. Some of those key hormones include:
- Cortisol
- Thyroid
- Insulin
- Estrogen
- HGH (Human Growth Hormone)
These key hormones dictate a lot of our bodily functions.
Cortisol, as you may know, is the stress hormone which is helpful for letting us know when we’re in danger, but if it gets out of control it can be detrimental to our health, specially cardiovascular health.
Thyroid is supremely important and often overlooked. Thyroid helps us regulate body temperature, controls our digestive tract, and helps us maintain mental clarity.
Insulin is a word you may associate with Diabetes, and for good reason. Insulin is an incredibly important hormone that determines our body’s ability to regulate our blood sugar level. Often the issue we see in patients regarding insulin is a resistance to it: Meaning their body is no longer utilizing insulin as well as possible, and blood sugar levels are getting out of controlled.
Estrogen is largely assumed to be the “woman’s hormone” and many men believe they don’t need it or even have it in their bodies to begin with. In fact, estrogen is vital for all humans, although it is the biggest player in female development, it is crucial for men’s health as well. Low levels of estrogen have been linked to weight gain and cardiovascular disease.
HGH (Human Growth Hormone) helps to regulate body composition, body fluids, muscle and bone growth, sugar and fat metabolism, and possibly heart function.
So What’s The Difference?
Perhaps by now you’re seeing why TRT might fall short of the goal many of our patients come to us with, and that’s total wellness. Our bodies need so much more attention and care than just testosterone – we need a custom, big-picture treatment plan that takes into account our entire body and state of wellness.
There’s a time and a place for TRT, and there are lots of people who are in a position that TRT alone will serve them well. For many others, HRT is a better approach to wellness, as it treats the entire hormone system, not just part of it.
